Africa’s fourth largest lake is located in Western Rwanda, and serves as a border between DR Congo and Rwanda. Lake Kivu is part of the Great Lake System and lies within the Albertine Rift. Lake Kivu has a rough, jagged coast and contains numerous islands.
A few resort towns are located on the banks of the lake. Lake Kivu is the perfect place to relax and take in some sun.
Less than an hours drive from Volcanoes National Park is Gisenyi, a lovely lakeside beach town. Gisenyi is set on a sandy beach lined with swaying palms, modern hotels and has a tropical atmosphere.
The beaches around Gisenyi are perfect for swimming, boat rides and a variety of water sports. Watersports available on Lake Kivu include windsurfing, hobie cats catamarans and kayaking.
